MEN'S GOLF Cards finish 10th in tourney

Despite mediocre play, BSU beats three other MAC schools

The men's golf team finished 10th out of 14 teams at the St. Croix Collegiate Classic, its first meet of the season. The Cardinals shot 913 (308-306-299), a mediocre performance, head coach Mike Fleck said.

"We made a lot of mistakes," he said. "(Our) scores were a little high. A lot of that was due to the fact that it was our first competition since last fall."

Fresno State won the won the tournament, beating Indiana by one stroke (878-879).

The Cardinals were led in scoring by freshman C.D. Hockersmith. His three-day total of 227 (78-78-71) placed him in a tie for 32nd overall. Hockersmith's final round 71 was the seventh-lowest of the day.

Sophomore Brandon Boomsma finished a stroke back of Hockersmith for the tournament, tying for 36th after shooting a 228 (76-77-75).

Freshman Wayne Denger tied for 43rd with a 229 (77-77-75). Denger said he did a good job on almost every part of his game, although the scores didn't show it.

"I did everything real well, but I wasn't pleased with the scores," Denger said.

Sophomore Patrick Wilkes-Krier rebounded from a rough opening round to shoot 237 (85-74-78) and tie for 63rd.

Rounding out the scoring for the Cards was Lance Scholl, who shot a 241 (77-79-85). Scholl, a junior, is the only player on the team who has earned more than one letter.

One of the team's goals before the meet was to finish above the other Mid-American Conference schools. The Cardinals finished higher than Marshall, Eastern Michigan and Akron.

With the first tournament under their belt, the Cardinals will look to improve on their mistakes.

"We have been working hard, but we need to focus on working hard on the right things," Denger said.

"We want to try to get better each and every day," Fleck said. "We need to be prepared week in and week out and be as competitive as we can against conference schools."
