LETTER: Teach 'responsible drinking' instead of trying to get rid of it

Dear Editor,

Karl Harford's murder serves to illuminate one of many problems with this campus. The one that comes to my mind is the need for the administration at this school to wake up and be proactive in preventing these types of tragedies. Yes, Ball State IS a party school. There is no denying it. The administrators need to stop pretending this is not a problem and do something about it. Clearly, you can't eliminate underage drinking; there are far too many naive students who think the only "cool" thing to do is get wasted Thursday through Sunday. What we can do is encourage more responsible drinking.

Educate students. Inform them about the consequences of underage drinking, binge drinking, DUI, and tell them how they can make themselves safer when they go off campus (whether it's to drink or just to visit), so they can avoid being part of something like this again. Two students in one year have been killed as an indirect result of off-campus parties; I think it's time the administration and the powers in charge (not to mention the students) on our campus did something to ensure things like this don't happen anymore.
