GYMNASTICS BSU heads to California for duel meet

Heading into the final meet of the regular season, the BallState gymnastics team looks to gain some momentum before theMid-American Conference Championships next week.

The Cardinals (4-8, 1-5 MAC) are on the road to take onCalifornia (8-6) Friday. They will likely look to build on theirseason-best 193.900 in their last meet against Kentucky.

"Being it's the end of the year, we're working on polishingroutines and focusing on the mental aspect," assistant coach TomHousley said.

The season thus far has not gone the way the Cards would haveliked. However, the team is not dwelling on the past. "We tell (thegymnasts) to be confident in our gymnastics even though the seasonhas been rough," Housley said.

Heading to California, the Cards will look to add to themultiple season and career-highs they set last week.

Jessica Surridge set a career-high in the all-around with herthird-place score of 38.975. She also tied a career-high on floor(9.775) and notched a season-best 9.800 on vault.

Courtney Vojtasek scored a season-high on vault (9.700) to tieher with Surridge for a third-place finish in the all-around.

Kelly Watson set a season-best score on beam (9.800) and tiedher season-best score on bars (9.775).

Both Jenna Tarkington and Kaitlyn Wills set season-high scoreson floor (9.775).

With the MAC Championships coming up March 19, the Cards arelooking forward to contend for the title.

"The seniors are doing a great job providing leadership, and thefreshmen have been very competitive," Housley said.

"(At the MAC Championships) we have a really good chance to gofor 195, which will put us in the running for the MAC title," hesaid.
