GYMNASTICS BSU falls despite season-high marks

Cardinals lose meet after leading in the final rotation

Ball State gymnastics lost to Kentucky despite a season-high score. The Wildcats won the meet 195.000 to 193.900, even though the Cardinals were leading 145.750 to 145.650 heading into the final rotation.

Ball State (4-8, 1-5 Mid-American Conference) finished with scores above 48 on every event for only the second time this year. The Cards won the beam 48.150 to 47.475 and tied their season-high score on floor (48.875).

According to assistant coach Tom Housley, the highest score of the season was due to consistency. The reason for this consistency was, "upgrading routines and going out and hitting them," he said.

Courtney Vojtasek has been one of the Cardinals most consistent performers this season. The senior is the only gymnast who has competed in the all-around every meet this year. Against Kentucky, Vojtasek tied for third in the all-around (38.975), her second best score this season. She also recorded a season-best score on vault (9.700) and led BSU on bars (9.800).

Jessica Surridge also tied for third in the all-around (38.975), recording a career high. She tied a career-best on floor (9.775) and led the Cards on vault with a season-high 9.800.

Freshman Kelly Watson's career-high 9.800 on beam tied her for first with Kentucky's Julie Joy. Watson also scored a season-best score on bars (9.625).

Colleen Dupuis recorded a season-high 9.800 to lead BSU on floor.

Freshman Jenna Tarkington notched a career-high on floor (9.775) and finished fifth overall in the all-around with a 38.325.

"Even though consistency was the key (to the teams' highest score of the year), we still have room for improvement," Housley said.
