Greeks want SGA more involved with events

Five of the eight members of the two slates are greek

Members of the greek community are looking to work more with the Student Government Association in the coming year and are taking this into account during the elections.

Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council and the National Panhellenic Council would like to improve the lines of communication with SGA.

"We never felt there was a wall, but never a bridge," former Panhellenic President Ali Kearns said.

IFC President Bo Moreland said he would like to plan community service events with SGA and other organizations.

National Panhellenic Council President Euliza Gates agrees with Moreland.

"We want to use all the resources available to us," Gates said.

Chris Kurtz, IFC vice president, said he would like the SGA president to come to meetings and know what is going on in their organization.

"We want someone who is excited to help out," Kurtz said.

The three greek councils have delegates who attend SGA meetings and carry concerns back and forth between the organizations.

Panhellenic Parliamentarian Jessica Paxson said her experience so far with SGA has been positive, although she said Panhellenic has not had to deal with SGA a lot.

"We haven't had to take any major concerns to SGA," Paxson said.

IFC is currently trying to change the Premium Plan policy allowing fraternity members to break their contract for a cheaper fee.

Chris Kurtz, IFC vice president, said when IFC mentioned this plan, SGA began looking into ways to inform incoming students that moving into a fraternity house does not allow them to break the contract without a fee.

The Premium Plan idea became an important issue when SGA presidential candidate Ben Tietz was IFC president in 2003.

Jacquemin said Panhellenic officers have been asked to remain neutral in the elections and not openly support any candidate. She is excited, though, with the number of greeks on the slates.

Between the two slates, five are members of a greek organization.

On the Tietz Slate, Tietz is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, vice-presidential candidate Olufunmbi Elemo is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and treasurer candidate Matt Filer is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

Presidential candidate Jayson Manship is not in a greek organization but council members said he has done a good job of getting to know the organizations.

However, on the Manship Slate, vice-presidental candidate Meghan Newlund is a member of Kappa Delta sorority and a panhellenic delegate, and treasurer candidate Sarah Atkinson is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

"This shows that the greek community is producing strong leaders," Jacquemin said.
