CD REVIEW: Something Corporate: "North"

Recent release

The Orange County quintet known as Something Corporate harmonically introduced their original sound into the national scene in 2001 with a song entitled "If You C Jordan." This song, and the album it was taken from entitled "Leaving Through the Window," brought with them a new sound for mainstream music. With the addition of a piano to the old punk equation of two guitars, a bass guitar, and drums the band's combination seemed unstoppable. Yet, after an appearance on the Warped Tour slate in 2002 the band seemed to lay dormant with minimal touring and no new album for almost three years. Now the band's beloved "piano rock" is back with a darker twist with the new album titled "North."

With "North," Something Corporate again changes the sound of mainstream music. It is musically more mature and lyrically much darker than the previous release. "North" contains many of the elements that "Leaving Through the Window" had, such as catchy tunes and standout lyrics, yet the tones of the music are much lower and the lyrics much deeper. The changes in tempo, tone, and lyrics show how much the band has grown since their first appearance in radio rotations.

During the first single released, "Space," lead singer Andrew McMahon belts out the lines "Hey! Give me space so I can breathe, give me space so I can sleep, give me space so you can drown in this with me." These lyrics show the deeper darker place Something Corporate tapped into during the production of "North." Although most of the album has a dark twist, Something Corporate stayed true to their light-hearted nature with some songs.-á-á-á

The shift in tone does wonders for the band. It shows they can write very mature songs while still writing radio friendly tunes. Although the band became famous with fun songs about the jerk in the high school and kissing a drunk girl they have moved on to much more serious lyrics and those lyrics along with the fun tunes will sustain their career for a long time. As the Band's slogan goes "Peace, Love, and Piano Rock!"
