CD REVIEW: Ellen Allien: 'Berlinette'

ELLEN ALLIEN "BERLINETTE"

Bpitch Control Records

We haven't been hearing much from the experimental electronica crowd lately. Aphex Twin has made a pretty decent living out of a cave, making no new music, Plaid has found a comfortable spot in the more palpable electro-pop category, and Squarepusher has become so experimental that it's lost its touch with reality. Who will save the genre now? In comes a German by the name of Ellen Allien who isn't all that new but whose sound is fresh-pressed. (Her music, unlike the Plague, took seven years to find an audience.) Her latest LP is wonderfully confusing. "Push" crackles and fizzes like pop rocks, "Augenblick" adds human feeling to a factory, and the live guitars of "Trash Scapes" and "Wish" mix with the perfect sampling properly. Aside from a couple ramblings, Allien will keep your attention long enough to make you forget about the rest of the weakening scene. "Berlinette" is definitely worth investigating.
