BSU police officer resigns

Rebecca Baer is third officer to leave UPD this semester

A three-year Ball State police officer resigned last week, marking the third time this semester that an officer has left thepolice department, a Ball State official said.

Ball State officer Rebecca L. Baer, 27, resigned Tuesday,University Police Chief Gene Burton said.

He said he didn't know why she resigned.

On Feb. 23, Baer was placed on administrative leave aftercriminal allegations were made against her the previous day, whichsparked a Muncie Police Department investigation.

Burton said Baer pulled out her gun during an argument with herboyfriend, with whom she was living, on Feb. 22.

After hearing about the incident, Burton said he decided toplace Baer on administrative leave because she had become a suspectin the act of a city police investigation.

"(It was an) investigation that made some allegations (againsther) that could lead to criminal charges being filed," Burton said."I felt based on the circumstances, it was pertinent to dothat."

Baer could not be reached for comment on the issue.

Since the university hired her in October 2001, Baer worked theafternoon shift in the department's uniform division.

She was an effective officer while at the police station, Burtonsaid.

While two other officers left the department in February to takenew positions at the Muncie Police Department and in privateindustry, Burton said Baer never told him her motive forleaving.

The university police is not assisting Muncie police with theinvestigation. Anything the university would do as far as lookinginto the situation would be internal discipline, Burton said.

"Considering it was one of our employees, we're letting theMuncie department handle the investigation," Burton said.
