University Program Board will bring a Ferris wheel to campus April 23 as part of its last Late Nite event, Student Government Association senator Andrew Greider said.
"UPB has saved $20,000 to sponsor a carnival, " Greider said. "They have $10,000 to work with for each Late Nite, and they've been saving up to do a big end of the year thing."
Cari Peterson, president of University Program Board, said nothing is finalized, yet. The planning committee, composed of five SGA and five UPB members, will meet Tuesday to discuss rides, food and other details. The committee held its first meeting Tuesday and went back to its committee members for approval, Peterson said.
Peterson said UPB wants to involve a wider range of students in the event.
"Usually our audience is freshmen and sophomores," Peterson said. "We want to involve upperclassmen and nontraditional students with families as well."
Greider said he hopes the rides, which range from a pirate ship to the Gravitron, can be set up in Lafollette's parking lot. Peterson said the green near North Quad is also an option.
Parking Services will need to approve the parking lot idea, Greider said.
UPB asked SGA to help promote the event to students and organizations, Greider said.
"UPB came to (SGA) and said they had a lot of money to spend," Greider said. "They wanted to do something really big. They asked if student government could help get some organizations involved."
Greider said organizations can work a booth, sponsoring their own game or one of the carnival's. Greider said he expects rental costs to fall between $200 to $600.
"I heard you can go somewhere and rent a dunk tank for $200," Greider said. "But someone can do a ring toss or (dart throw) to pop balloons on a cork board."
Other attractions will include a main stage for local bands, bouncy boxing and possibly a fireworks show. Interested organizations can e-mail Greider.
Peterson said UPB welcomes any student suggestions or ideas. Going to Feb. 27 Late Nite at Pruis Hall will familiarize students with the format, Peterson said, and ensure their advice is feasible.
The planning committee will meet again Tuesday to finalize details.
