Tunnel highlights diversity week

Group hopes to raise awareness in recognizing diversity on campus

To promote student awareness of discrimination, the Residence Hall Association is sponsoring diversity programs throughout the week.

RHA President William "Moses" Malone said the activities will expose students to a variety of discrimination occurring in every day situations.

"We hope students will gain a better understanding of diversity and accept those differences," Malone said. "Students need to be aware of oppressive activities that occur."

Students can view acts of discrimination in the "Tunnel of Oppression" from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, in the Botsford and Swinford Halls lounge.

Students can walk through the tunnel again from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday in the lounge.

The tunnel will feature different scenes portraying discrimination such as racism, body image, domestic violence, suicide and homosexuality, publicity chairman Anne Reder said.

"We hope students will recognize that diversity is all around us," Reder said. "Diversity is something to love and not to shoot down."

On Wednesday, students can sign "Walk the Talk" contracts.

By signing the contracts, students are pledging to be supportive of diversity on campus.

To show their support, students can pick up "Walk the Talk" buttons with their contracts, Reder said.

Students can sign contracts in three different areas: LaFollette Complex dining area from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Woodworth Complex dining area from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Atrium from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Students can also buy tickets for RHA's Fire and Ice dance on Feb. 28 in the Atrium, Reder said.

Jessica Pfeiffer, representative for Wood Hall, said that RHA hopes students will realize the power of their words by walking through the "Tunnel of Oppression" or signing the contracts.

"Students need to become more aware of what they say and to who they say it," Pfeiffer said. "Some students don't realize how it directly affects someone else."

Malone said the association hopes to have an additional event with its 5 p.m. meeting Thursday in the Tichenor and DeMotte Halls lounge.
