Senators absent at committee meeting

Search officials receive about 400 of 745 signatures collected

Student Government Association has 745 signatures asking for another student representative on the Presidential Search Committee.

On Thursday, the committee received 372 of those signatures.

Miscommunication caused SGA officials to miss the committee's meeting. Vice President Ben Tietz said he thought the committee meeting started at 5 p.m. Thursday. It began at 2 p.m.

"I just took what was there and asked him to keep me updated on the total," Sarah Atkinson, student representative on the committee, said.

Atkinson said Tietz contacted her at 3:45 p.m., saying that SGA had 596 signatures. However, the meeting had already ended.

Atkinson said the petition was well-received by the committee. She plans to call committee chairman Frank Bracken today to notify him of the final number, she said.

"I will continue to update him with the final total of the signatures," Atkinson said. "As a representative, it's my responsibility to let him know what the student body is thinking."

Atkinson said she's not sure when Bracken will address SGA.

"It's in his hands now," Atkinson said.

Bracken would not return phone calls.

Tietz said SGA's agenda committee will discuss a deadline for the search committee's response Monday.

"Not to say the decision is going to be made in agenda, because I don't think it will," Tietz said. "It'll probably be made in Senate. We'll ask senators and see what they think."

Tietz said anyone who is still circulating a petition should turn it into the SGA office in the Student Center immediately.

"I hope it makes an impact," Tietz said. "For only having a week's time, the amount of signatures we got was pretty good."

As for the search, Atkinson said the committee is making good progress. It is currently reviewing candidates, according to the timeline on its Web site, www.bsu.edu/presidentialsearch.
