Students often complain about Parking Services. No one wants to be given a piece of paper requiring them to pay the university.
Regardless of how students feel about the department, Parking Services employees deserve the respect of anyone who parks on campus. They work each day to enforce Ball State's parking rules. Though students, staff and faculty might not agree with these rules, they exist.
Without parking service employees, parking would be a free-for-all. Those with parking tags would not stand a chance finding a spot. People who did not purchase a tag might take advantage of permit-only lots. People might also park in inopportune spots, including those reserved for specific vehicles. Without revenue from parking tags and fines, the university might not have afforded to build a new parking structure.
Because Parking Services is necessary, employees are needed to enforce these rules.
Students, staff and faculty should show respect to Parking Services employees. They are working because they need to be, not because they necessarily enjoy giving people fines. These workers are like any other campus employee. Often, they are even forced to work in inclement weather.
It is very easy to direct anger or disappointment with a ticket at a Parking Services employee. Those who park on campus should do their best to refrain from this behavior. Regardless of their power to ticket, Parking Services employees are people.
Sometimes, the occasional mishap occurs if a car is ticketed when it is not supposed to be. As in all professions, mistakes happen. Concerns should be brought to the Parking Services office instead of taken out angrily at employees.
They might watch the meters until they click to zero. They might ticket two minutes before free parking begins. But this is their job. It might not seem fair to every person who parks on campus, but Parking Services is here to stay.
