AT ISSUE: Student Government Association to present petition to presidential committee today

Student Government Association took a stance and followed through.

In one week's time, SGA has gathered more than 400 student signatures on petitions to add another student to the presidential search committee.

SGA did a great job in a number of facets. Senators made a decision, did their best to rally student support and now will use their work to try to get another voice on the committee.

The petitions are to be presented to the committee today.

It is important that students understand why SGA is going through these motions to get more student representation.

SGA and the DAILY NEWS believe that Sarah Atkinson, the student member on the committee, will serve the students well. This petition has not been supported because anyone has doubts about Atkinson's ability.

It just would not hurt to get one more student voice on the committee.

SGA did its job by supporting the needs of its only constituents: students. Senators and executive board members have shown that they are making an effort to ensure that the students get as many opportunities as possible to voice student needs in the search.

If refused, SGA should not stop its fight. If SGA members truly believe in this cause, they should not let the issue die.

If another student is added, we encourage SGA to push for a public appointment process. Each member of the committee has been picked by the Board of Trustees. All students deserve a fair chance at the position because the choice the committee makes affects the entire campus.

Whatever the outcome, students should have confidence in Atkinson to serve them.
