Ball State saw an increase in scholarship gift funds between June 2002 and Dec. 31.
The university received about $4.5 million in private gifts.
The Lilly Endowment Inc. agreed to match up to $3.5 million for academics. The matching donation was broken down into three categories: $3 million from alumni, $250,000 from parents and students, and $250,000 from faculty and staff.
The university will use a portion of the donations to create a merit scholarship program.
The program will recruit high school students from Indiana and across the nation who have earned National Merit, National Achievement and National Hispanic scholar honors.
With the private gifts and the Lilly Endowment Inc.'s matching donation, the university will create 48 new scholarship funds and scholarship endowments.
