MEN'S BASKETBALL Purdue center arrested after bar fight

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue center Ivan Kartelo's status for the team's next game was uncertain Monday following his arrest over the weekend after police said he punched a bouncer at a bar near campus.

Purdue coach Gene Keady said he was withholding judgment on disciplinary action for at least a day until he gets all the information needed. Keady has not decided if Kartelo will play in Purdue's next game, which is at No. 12 Wisconsin on Sunday.

''There will be in-house discipline, but as far as details, I'm not going to get into that,'' Keady said.

Kartelo, 24, faces preliminary misdemeanor charges of public intoxication and battery, police said. Officers arrested Kartelo after he hit the Wabash Yacht Club employee about 2 a.m. Sunday at the club, police said.

Kartelo was booked into the Tippecanoe County Jail and released Sunday after posting a $250 cash bond.

The native of Split, Croatia, participated in the Boilermakers' Sunday practice, but Keady made Kartelo off limits to reporters afterward. A telephone message seeking comment was left Monday at Kartelo's home number.

Police said no other members of the basketball team were involved in the fight and no one else was arrested.

The 6-foot-11 Kartelo is averaging 5.4 points and six rebounds this season for the Boilermakers (17-9, 7-6 Big Ten).

When asked what he thought of one of his seniors getting into trouble, Keady said, ''You don't want to know my reaction.

''He let himself down, he let his family down and he let his teammates down.''

The Boilermakers were coming off a big road win at Minnesota and Keady said he warned the players to be careful in how they celebrated.

''It was one of those things where not listening to what the coaches said got him in jeopardy,'' Keady said.
