Dear Editor,
Today is National Girls' and Women's Sports Day. This is a celebration of girls and women in sports all around the country. On this day, activities, award ceremonies and community-based events happen in all 50 states that promote young girls' and women's participation in sports. After Title IX, participation figures in women's sports have increased. The Women's Sports Foundation, an advocacy group which promotes women's sports, American Association of University Women, Girl Scouts of America, Girls Inc., National Association of Girls and Women in Sports, YWCA, with support from the National Women's Law Center made National Girls and Women's Sport Day into a large-scale event. The largest NGWSD event has taken place in Washington, D.C.
It is in Washington D.C. where influential political figures, prominent athletes, trustees from the Women's Sports Foundation and staff members hold events that show tremendous strides in women's sports.
Donna Shalala, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, spoke about the current state of women's sports the year I helped to coordinate National Girls and Women's Sports Day in 1999. Also, young girls involved in organizations such as the Girl Scouts of America, YWCA, and other Washington, D.C. based organizations met various female athletes, received awards for specific achievements and some attended seminars about women's sports. From an inside perspective of this event, many groups of people have an overall interest to guide young girls toward a common goal of participating in sports. The event held in Washington, D.C. represents the outstanding efforts of those who hold NGWSD events throughout the country. Wherever you are, participate in an activity in your area to promote two of the greatest things about this day: fun and spirit. I believe it is important for everyone to know about this day because it gives students, faculty, and employees at Ball State University a chance to make a long lasting impression on their daughters' future.
