LETTER: Strip club story degrades women

Dear Editor:

I was very sorry for many reasons to see last week's DAILY NEWS feature on area strip clubs. Its appearance during the wonderfully named "Vagina-Friendly Week" was ironic because, according to one of the week's organizers, "the purpose of the week is to bring awareness about violence against women and girls."-áWhen the DAILY NEWS encourages men to see women as sex objects it only makes that violence more likely. The article also appeared, intentionally I assume, only a few days before Valentine's Day, when we are encouraged to honor our relationships with our loved ones, not those we merely lust after. A visit to the fantasy land of a strip club will not bring you closer to your wife or girlfriend on Valentine's Day (or any other day for that matter) but instead creates resentment on both sides of the relationship.-á

Unfortunately, this letter did not anticipate the appearance of the article, so I can only bring attention to the problems after the fact.-áI hope that some of you current DAILY NEWS staffers, who might be in editorial positions next year, will clip this letter and put it in your "ideas for Valentine's Day articles" file.-áMay it give you food for thought as you plan for Valentine's Day coverage next year.
