GYMNASTICS BSU struggles with loss due to injuries

Ball State recovers from depleted lineup to win beam

With only five gymnasts competing on the vault and floor events, the Ball State gymnastics team suffered two losses over the weekend. Due to injuries, a depleted lineup was unable to produce competitive scores.

On Saturday Illinois-Chicago defeated Ball State 195.050 to 192.100. The Cardinals were unable to put out the Flames, but won beam 48.550 to 48.075.

Junior Jessica Surridge finished second overall in the all-around with a season-best 38.825. Surridge recorded a career-high score of 9.775 on beam, tying for team-high honors. She also tied for team-best on vault, scoring a 9.675. Surridge placed second on the team on bars (9.625) and floor (9.750).

Freshman Kaitlyn Wills recorded a career-high 9.775 on floor, finishing first for Ball State.

Fellow freshman Jenna Tarkington scored a career-best 9.675 on vault, tying Surridge for team-best. Junior Colleen Dupuis also notched a career-high on vault (9.775), matching Surridge.

Courtney Vojtasek finished first for BSU on bars (9.800). The senior also finished with an all-around score of 38.350.

On Sunday Ball State (4-5, 1-4 Mid-American Conference) struggled against conference foe Northern Illinois. The Cardinals lost to the Huskies 194.525 to 190.375. The score was the lowest for the team so far this season.

Vojtasek led the way for the Cards, finishing with the best score on the team for three of the four events. She finished second on beam (9.775) and placed third overall on bars (9.775) and floor (9.800). Vojtasek also finished third in the all-around (38.650).-á

Freshmen Kelly Watson and Tarkington tied for team-best honors on vault (9.650), placing fourth overall.

Wills scored a career-best 9.475 on vault, and Surridge finished with a 37.600 in the all-around.
