GYMNASTICS Ball State faces UIC, Northen Illinois on consecutive days

Cardinals are coming off their best performance of the season

Coming off the highest team score of the season, the Ball State gymnastics team will travel to Illinois this weekend for a pair of matches. The Cardinals will face Illinois-Chicago on Saturday and take-on conference rival Northern Illinois on Sunday.

Ball State (4-3, 1-3 Mid-American Conference) compiled a season-high 193.425 in the Cardinal Classic. The Cardinals were able to post solid scores in all four events as they finished with a 48 total or higher in each for the first time this year.

Illinois-Chicago (1-8) enters Saturday's matchup fresh off its first win of the season. The Flames and Cardinals have one common opponent so far this year: Illinois. The Cardinals defeated the Fighting Illini, while the Flames went down in defeat.

Northern Illinois (1-4) enters Sunday's meet after losing to Illinois State, a team that Ball State has beaten twice this season.

The Cardinals were able to post their best score of the year, thanks to solid contributions from many of the team's members. Jessica Surridge, Courtney Vojtasek and Jenna Tarkington all posted decent all-around scores. Freshmen Nikki Howe and Kelly Watson recorded career-highs in the events in which they competed. Senior Jenny Taylor produced her best beam score of the season and junior Colleen Dupuis posted a season-high score on bars.-á-á-á

The Cardinals will look to continue their success against teams from the state of Illinois, where three of their four wins have come from.-á

The recipe for success for this weekend, as with any meet, is fairly simple: eliminate falls. "They just have to hit," said coach Mary Roth.
