Board fines Manship slate

Tietz files seperate complaint claiming poster violations

The Student Government Association Elections Board fined SGA President Jayson Manship's slate for a campaign infraction Monday night.

Manship said the board fined his slate $45 for campaign material that three resident assistants placed in their halls without a hall director's permission.

Cassie Greer, assistant residence hall director for Tichenor/Trane Hall, said any fliers posted by RAs must be approved by either the hall directors or the main housing office in LaFollette Complex.

Manship said his slate sent kits to RAs that included a printed campaign poster, a one-page biography on each member of the slate and one page for each of his platform issues.

Manship said it was his intention for the RAs to have the material approved by the hall directors, and that he was not trying to force anyone to put up his posters.

"It says specifically on the RA kit that this is a bulletin board idea," he said.

On Monday, the Elections Board requested to see the kits and met to discuss the situation.

Joe Flores, Elections Board chairman, could not be reached for comment.

Ben Tietz's slate also filed a complaint against the Manship slate on Monday, Manship said. In the complaint, Tietz raised concerns about Manship's use of the SGA logo in his posters. He also claimed that Manship posters were covering his.

Tietz also could not be reached for comment Monday night.

Manship said Kay Bales, associate vice president of student life, asked him over the weekend to remove the logo.

Bales said the SGA Elections Board didn't want students to get the impression that it was endorsing the Manship Slate.

"The SGA logo is reserved for official SGA business," Bales said.

Manship and his campaign team are tracking down all their campaign fliers to cover up the SGA logo that originally appeared on them.

"We have done what we can," he said. "We went out with gold stickers and covered up the logos on all the flyers we could find."

Manship said his team had covered the logo on about 600 posters, and members of his team have more stickers to place on any posters they find that have not had the logo covered.

"Since we've taken all the steps to correct it, they're not going to charge us with that," he said.

Manship also sent an e-mail on Monday to RAs telling them to remove posters he sent them and replace them with new posters without the logo.

Manship said in the e-mail that his slate placed the logo on the posters so students would know what they were voting for.

Bales said she doesn't believe the Elections Board will place any sanctions on the Manship Slate as long as it removes the logo.

"At this point, as long as they correct it, the Elections Board would be fine with that," she said.

Manship also said when Elections Board members went to see if his posters were covering Tietz's, they actually found Tietz posters covering his. He said both slates received a warning.

Manship said his slate has not decided whether to appeal yet. He said he knows that one of the RAs received a verbal agreement from the hall director, but the director was out of town and could not comment on the issue to the Elections Board.
