YOUR TURN: Track teams deserve priority for facilities

Dear Editor,

There are two very successful teams at Ball State University, the men's and women's track teams. As most of you know, last summer

the administration cut the men's track program (effective the 2005 season). By the way both the men's and women's teams are currently being treated by the administration you would not know that the track programs are still teams working hard to represent themselves and Ball State. The women's track program has been one of the most successful teams on campus in the last ten years winning many MAC championships. The men's team has had its share of success over the last few years; there have been several All-Americans and Olympic hopefuls. The men's program last year earned Academic All-American status when the team GPA was 3.0 and in the top 10 teams of the country. This year the men's team has turned in a 3.18 team GPA, and when the rankings come out it is sure to be one of the best in the country. Currently both teams are in the heart of their indoor season, practicing hard everyday at 3:00 pm in the Field Sports Building (the indoor track) and competing at meets every weekend. However, the athletic administration has granted the football team permission to practice Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:00 p.m., forcing the men's and women's track teams to practice at 6:00 a.m. in the morning. It is an outrage that the football team that is not in season has priority over the track teams that are in season. In the four years that I have been a varsity member of the men's track team I have never run on the football fields during their practice time or lifted in their weight rooms, so why can they run on our track?
