WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD Cards 'rusty' after season-opener

Scully wins 1,600; Winfrey wins 600 in Saturday's meet

With some positives and negatives revealed at the season-opener Purdue Open last Saturday, the most important thing for the Ball State women's track team is that it knows what to improve.

"There was some good and bad, and you always get that from the first meet," head coach Sue Parks said. "We were a little rusty in some spots."

Highlighting the meet were several top performances from freshmen runners, including a third place by Christina Poulson in the 60-meter dash.

"I think Christina Poulson is going to be a tremendous college runner," Parks said.

In their first collegiate meet, freshmen Alex Marshall and Amanda Ponsot finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 600-meter run.

"I thought the freshmen handled their competition really well," Parks said. "They really showed that they're going to be able to step up and help the team. Right now, we need the older runners to step it up, and I'm sure they will when we get to a scored meet situation."

Freshmen Karmen Mabry and Alison Zuidervliet took seventh and eighth in the shot put with throws of 38-1 1/2 inches and 37-6 respectively.

"It was my first meet in college, so I was nervous," Zuidervliet said. "I was happy with my place but not with my distance. I was throwing close to 40 feet every day in practice, so I was disappointed I did not reach that."

Sophomore Jill Scully took first place in the 1,600 with a time of 5:10.03, with teammate Rose Lehe in second at 5:14.64.

"I think I got some good starts in my races and kept a steady pace," Scully said. "It was neat in the mile because Rose Lehe was right behind me, so we helped push each other."

In the 600, sophomore Crystal Winfrey's time of 1:34.84 was good for first. Winfrey, along with Poulson, Marshall and Latosha Jollet, were also part of the 4x400 relay team that finished first with a time of 4:03.21.

The high jump was also a strong suit for the Cardinals, as junior Ashley Gillies took third place at 5-5 34. In fifth was freshman Katie Laughlin with a jump of 5-3 34.

"Our goal was to compete hard and get one in this week, and we know we're going to need to step it up a lot," Parks said. "I think we're capable of doing that."

The team continues its indoor season Friday in the first scored meet of the season, the Notre Dame Triangular.
