WOMEN'S SWIMMING Cardinals expect close match with Eagles

Kait Martin is coming off second MAC Swimmer of the Week

The women's swimming and diving team enters their home meet tonight against Eastern with a 7-4 record overall and a 1-2 in the MAC.

Eastern is coming off a loss to Oakland Friday. In that meet, the Eagles (3-4, 1-2 MAC) had wins by Nancy Arnold (500-yard freestyle and 1000-yard freestyle) and Anca Tilea (1-meter and 3-meter diving). They also finished in second-place five times and third in seven races.

Kait Martin, who won the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes last weekend against Toledo, was named this week's MAC Women's Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season

"I was thrilled. Kait's put a lot of work this season," coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said. "I really expect nothing but the best this week (from her)."

Against Toledo, the Cardinals crushed the Rockets, 208.50-91.50 finishing with 33 top-three finishes. Of 15 events, Ball State won 12.

"Last weekend was a total surprise," Seibold-Caudill said. "It's nice to get some conference wins."

Seibold-Caudill was extremely pleased with the performance of the diving squad over the weekend. Both men's and women's divers stayed behind in Muncie while the swimmers traveled to Florida over Christmas Break.

"I think it benefited a lot," she said. "They improved a lot. I think all of our divers are going to be a factor in the conference meet."

Cassandra Pavlovich won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events against both Valpo and Toledo. She also qualified for the NCAA Zone Championships during the weekend, and if she finishes in the top six, will advance to the NCAA Championships at the end of the season. Seibold-Caudill called it a huge accomplishment for the junior.

Seibold-Caudill expects this Friday's meet to be a very close one. Eastern is traditionally a strong team, but graduated a lot of key swimmers last season.

"Last year it came down to the last relay," she said. "(Eastern) is capable of pulling off a good win."

The Cardinals have been fighting sickness recently, but Seibold-Caudill doesn't expect that to be a factor.
