SGA disappointed as Board ignores its complaints

Search committee's student representative will listen to senators

Student Government Association senators were shocked when the Board of Trustee's announcement interrupted their meeting.

"I'm kind of speechless here," Ben Tietz, SGA vice president, said. "They're still leaving the students at one."

The Board announced that it would add another faculty member to the presidential search committee. Both faculty and students have been asking for more representation on the board.

The senators might get some help next week, though, when the lone student representative on the committee, Sarah Atkinson, will attend the senate meeting to listen to questions.

"If we voice our satisfaction or disapproval, it's good to see her response," Tietz said. "Even if she says she can't give you an answer, she can take information back to the search committee."

Other than that, Tietz said senators are powerless.

"We can voice our opinion," Tietz said. "That's about the best we can do."

Tietz explained the relationship of the board of trustees to University Senate and SGA. Senators then asked how far the board's power can reach.

"Is it too late for the student body to change the way they pick a president?" Diversity and Multicultural Affairs committee member Tonya Jamerson asked.

Tietz said SGA couldn't change anything.

"Basically it's up to the board of trustees," Tietz said. "They're the people who have the last say on anything."

On-campus caucus member Chad Wells asked why the board changed its search method.

"Honestly, it's up to the board of trustees to choose a president," Tietz said. "There's nothing we can do as far as changing how they're doing it. If they choose to do something different, they can do something different."

Freshman caucus member Steve Geraci asked whose president the board is hiring.

"Is the board of trustees picking a president for themselves?" Geraci asked. "That doesn't seem real fair then, does it?"5521-¦>+â-«?N_SGA pres pg.5_1/29/04DNEditorial552SORTf+â-ä2AUDT
