AT ISSUE: Each year, companies scam students in Spring Break vacation packages

The cold winter weather makes most students look forward to spending their Spring Break in a warm climate.

But a decent vacation package comes at a price. The lure of inexpensive all-inclusive Spring Break trips is strong, especially among people watching their pocketbooks.

Students are prime targets for scams because some people think it is easy to entice students with seemingly good deals.

While planning a Spring Break getaway, do not just take the best deal on the table just because it seems to be the most reasonable. Take the time to plan ahead and even check with the Better Business Bureau Web site before adhering to vacation plans with any company. Planning ahead with this step could mean the difference between enjoying seven days on the beach or scraping to find a way back home.

Maybe spending a little extra cash and booking the trip through a travel agent your friends or family trust could also make a difference.

Part of enjoying Spring Break should include keeping finances safe. Students might be told the company they have chosen is legitimate, but they will never know unless they check.

Not every Spring Break has to include a tropical climate. A road trip to nearby Chicago, Milwaukee or Cincinnati might not offer suntans and surfing, but will still provide plenty to do. If something happens, it is far easier to get help returning home from a nearby state than to find a last-minute flight from Mexico to Indiana.

Do not be afraid to ask for parents' assistance. Most parents would be proud of their children for being cautious about their finances and safety. Spending money on a trip is an adult decision that demands students take responsibility.

Spring Break is usually one of the more memorable experiences in college life. It is up to the people planning the trip whether or not those memories will be happy ones.
