OUR VIEW A strong leader to fill the void

AT ISSUE: Experienced senator assumes Student Government Association vice president position

Student Government Association's first meeting of the spring semester Wednesday featured a vacancy: Former vice president Adam Ittenbach.

Ittenbach left SGA to study abroad in England. He was replaced by former president pro tempore Ben Tietz, the most experienced senator in the organization.

Ittenbach's departure will hurt SGA in more ways than just losing a member. SGA members will now have to prove that when they take office, they will not only do their best for Ball State, but also stay to get the job done.

Voter turnout in Ball State elections have been consistently low at around 12 percent each year. It could be that students do not think SGA works, SGA does not have enough power to make changes at the university, or senators do not care enough about issues.

The opportunity to study abroad can be an educational and rewarding experience, and it could be that as a student Ittenbach saw an opportunity he could not refuse.

However, when the slate in which he held such a high office was inaugurated March 19, Ittenbach made a promise. He promised to serve Ball State students as the vice president of SGA and the highest student senator.

Promoting Tietz to fill the position could positively affect SGA.

Tietz has the capability to be an effective leader. His credentials include serving as 2003 Interfraternity Council President while holding the parliamentarian office for SGA. Tietz has offered guidance to senators under three administrations. SGA will benefit if Tietz continues his efforts.

Ball State students should feel relieved that a qualified senator took Ittenbach's place. If Ittenbach did what was best for his academic career, students can only hope that Tietz does what is best for Ball State.
