LIVE REVIEW Emerson: Dillinger Escape Plan

Last Sunday, two of rock's noisiest and craziest played at the Emerson Theater in Indianapolis. I, along with a few hundred other people, was fortunate enough to catch both the Dillinger Escape Plan and the Locust together in one night in downtown Indy.

The downside of the night was most definitely the nearly hour-long wait outside in the frigid cold to ensure getting into what would most likely be a sold-out show. However, once the show started, with Your Enemies Friends and the Oath opening, everyone was in good spirits again.

The Locust, all clad in white locust outfits, pummeled the crowd with its blast beats, lightning fast guitars and minute-long songs. Although not danceable, the Locust's outlandish music and style may have been the highlight of the night. Playing a unique brand of, what some might call thrash-core, the Locust was able to captivate my attention like few bands have been able to before.

After the audio-barrage of the Locust, Dillinger Escape Plan took the stage amidst creepy ambient music, fog machines and bright white strobe lights. The band launched directly into "Hollywood Squares," from their Irony Is A Dead Scene album, and from there everything just blew up.

Dillinger's stage presence was remarkable; complete with band members diving into the crowd and pulling audience members on stage (and then promptly pushing them back into the crowd). Musically, they were flawless, which really says something in their case since many of their songs lack the cliche verse-chorus-verse structure of most other bands, or music for that matter.

The only thing missing in Dillinger Escape Plan's set, and the night overall, was the fact that Dillinger did not play their stirring live rendition of Aphex Twin's electronic, IDM masterpiece "Come to Daddy."

On a scale of 10, I would have to rate the show an 8 out of 10. The music was incredible, but the long wait out in the cold knocked off a point as did (as I previously mentioned) Dillinger not playing "Come to Daddy."

I highly recommend that no matter what type of music you like, if you get the chance to see either the Dillinger Escape Plan or the Locust, jump at the opportunity to go. You will have a great time, or at least be thoroughly entertained.
