Group attends march in D.C.

Members of Students for Life remember Roe v. Wade decision

Through her laughter and tears, Monica Moak said she found her voice at the American Collegians for Life Conference over the weekend.

"Abortion is not an issue," Moak, Students for Life co-president, said. "It's a matter of life or death. I got more than an education last weekend; I got my drive back for the pro-life cause."

Moak and four Students for Life members protested the 31st anniversary of Roe v. Wade at the March for Life in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 22.

In 1973 the Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in the United States.

Freshman Alexandra Lawrence said she jumped at the opportunity to participate in the march.

"I learned that I'm not alone in the pro-life cause," she said. "People are doing the exact same things our club is doing."

During the conference, students attended workshops and listened to speakers at the Catholic University of America, she said.

The workshops taught the students how to recruit new members, raise funds and educate their communities, freshman John Gerritsen said.

He said he learned how to educate people about abortion without preaching to them.

"We're here to educate, not to preach to people," he said. "We're not here to bring down hell, fire and damnation on people. We're just here to educate people."

One speaker in particular motivated the students into stepping up their anti-abortion actions.

Bioethics director of Stand to Reason, a Christian anti-abortion advocate group, Scott Klusendorf helped Moak realize the importance of education.

"He reminded me of why I'm in this fight," she said. "Babies are dying and women are hurting. We need to take action now."

To take a more active role, secretary Michelle Runyon said the group plans to join forces with other Indiana anti-abortion college groups.

At the conference, Runyon said Notre Dame students invited the group to an anti-abortion conference at Notre Dame on Mar. 19 and 20.

Building on the connections they made at the conference, Moak said she hopes to invite speakers for the Students for Life dinner April 17.

The catered dinner at the Christian Campus House is open to the public, but reservations are needed by March 17.

Reservations can be made by e-mailing the group at bsus4l@hotmail.com.
