Greeks seek new recruits

Fraternity recruitment will begin this weekend, but new-member rates are expected to be low.

"Freshmen guys usually make friends in the dorms and then don't want to break that mold," Ryan Malone, Sigma Alpha Epsilon president said.

During fall recruitment, fraternities averaged 14 new members, but numbers are expected to be as low as five in the spring, Rob Turning, assistant director of Student Organizations and Activities said.

Due to these low numbers, recruitment in the spring is much more relaxed.

"It's not structured at all," Turning said. "but we did send out information to transfers and new students."

Theta Chi President Jim Vandy said he wants spring recruitment to be a bigger deal.

"[Theta Chi] is trying to break away from this and have a strong recruitment," Vandy said. "People don't try as hard during the spring."

Theta Chi has had their members living in the residence halls try to get men interested in their fraternity.

"There are two types of guys," Vandy said. "Those who came to college and knew they wanted to join a fraternity. And there are 'maybe' joiners-- who end up in their Spring Semester regretting not joining a fraternity."

Theta Chi is looking for as many as 20 new members.

"It just depends on the quality of the guy," Vandy said.

Turning said a lot of potential fraternity members may have not had grades to join a fraternity and may be looking to join after having a semester to raise them.

SAE is looking for about 10 guys to add to its 60 members.

Chris Windsor, Sigma Nu recruitment chair, said he always likes to see about 10 to 20 new guys in the spring, but the chances of that are slim.

"All the guys that wanted to rush, rushed in the fall," Windsor said.

Turning said fraternities don't have to participate in spring recruitment if they do not feel they need new members.

Fraternities who are participating will be providing new members with bowling, food and poker as a way to get to know their chapter.
