PHC, IFC install new executive officers for 2004

Former Presidents Alison Kearns, Ben Tietz reflect on 2003

The Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils gathered Thursdayevening to put new officers into executive positions for 2004.

"The new councils have big shoes to fill," Lynda Malugen,director of student organizations and activities, said.

The 2004 Panhellenic Council president is Lori Jacquemin. BowenMoreland is the Interfraternity Council president.

"I am nervous but really excited," Jacquemin said. "I receive alot of support from everyone."

Jacquemin said she hopes to continue the tradition of excellencein the Panhellenic Council and set the bar a little higher.

"We have a high caliber of women on executive council,"Jacquemin said.

After returning from Winter Break, Jacquemin said she willadjust to new positions and make sorority members aware of the newofficers' purpose, she said.

Moreland and Jacquemin said they want to hold more eventstogether because combining the two councils will help make thegreek organizations stronger and more noticed on campus.

"We need to open the lines of communication between thedifferent councils," Jacquemin said.

Moreland also said he hopes to sit down with the NationalPan-Hellenic Council and Panhellenic Council to discuss eachcouncil's goals and how to achieve them together.

While the evening looked toward the future, former presidentsAlison Kearns and Ben Tietz recalled the success the councils hadin 2003.

"(Panhellenic Council) had a successful recruitment with thehighest retention rate in seven years," Kearns said. "We held manyprograms that addressed multiple issues facing college students,including relationships, alcohol abuse, career planning andhealth."

Tietz said the Interfraternity Council has come an "amazingdistance" from where it was when he became president.

"We have rewritten our constitution and bylaws and created a newlearning program," Tietz said.

Moreland created the learning program, which brings newfraternity members into the Learning Center for a specific amountof time each week.

"(The Interfraternity Council) has reinvented itself this yearand will continue to under the leadership of Bowen Moreland," Tietzsaid.
