No. 23 made an appearance in Worthen arena Wednesday night, andlike the most famous namesake of the jersey, the wearer led histeam to a crucial victory.
Dennis Trammell discarded his normal No. 30 early in the secondhalf to don the legendary number after he received a blow to theface and began to bleed on his regular jersey. During the ensuingtimeout, he made the switch.
Forward Cameron Echols said he is in favor of Trammell keepingthe second jersey for the remainder of the season.
"I didn't look at it at first until he scored a basket, and thenI was like,'Dennis has on another jersey.' I think that jersey fithim," Echols said.
Trammell, who scored 11 points in each jersey and ignited an 8-0run that sealed the victory for Ball State, said he would wear No.23 every game if it won games for the team. In the second half theCardinals leaned on the leadership of the junior transfer, andBuckley said he responded because of his rock solid mindset.
"He never gets rattled," Buckley said. "You could do pretty muchanything you want to to him and you can't shake him no matterwhat."
Buckley credited Trammell's upbringing and his high school yearsat Westinghouse in Chicago as the major reasons for the guard'sinner calm.
The Cardinals finished the first half trailing by four points, but with aggressive defense that held Butler's high-powered,three-point based offense in check, Ball State crawled back intoposition to record the victory. Trammell tallied a thunderousblocked shot on Butler's Bruce Horan that brought the fans to theirfeet before hitting a three-pointer to start Ball State'sbackbreaking run in the second half.
"I felt in the second half I was on the attack mode for thewhole second half period, and I learned that from the first halfthat we needed to be on the attack, regardless," Trammell said.
After the game ended Trammell joined his teammates in a victorycelebration by running along the first row slapping hands with theCluckheads.
