FOOTBALL: Scott wins Most Valuable Player Award Sunday

enior linebacker Lorenzo Scott was given the 2003 JohnMagnabosco Most Valuable Player Award at the football team'spostseason banquet Sunday.

Scott ranked second on the team and fourth in the Mid-AmericanConference with 138 tackles and earned First-Team All-MAChonors.

Scott, a four-year starter, led the Cardinals in tackles hisfirst three seasons, and in 2003 he notched 19 tackles for loss,including four sacks, and four forced fumbles, both team highs

The John Magnabosco Award is named for Ball State's winningestfootball coach, who compiled 68 wins from 1935-52.

True freshman receiver Bryan Williamson received outstandingfreshman of the year, while classmates Casey Gillin (quarterback)and Temidayo McCarthy (defensive end) were scout team players ofthe year.

Senior offensive lineman Travis Barclay, a Second-Team All-MACselection, received the team's academic award. Barclay is atwo-time Academic All-American. Junior safety Justin Beriault, wholed the team in tackles with 145 and also received First-TeamAll-MAC, received the inspiration award. Sophomore safety DavidGater recorded 18 tackles and blocked two kicks to receive thespecial teams award, while cornerback Jesse Avant and defensive endPaul Strabavy received senior contribution awards.

Ball State finished 4-8 overall and 3-5 in the MAC in BradyHoke's first season as head coach.
