Campus Crusade for Christ members failed to break a world recordFriday night, but brought more than 400 students together to heartheir Christian message.
About 450 students gathered at Irving Gym to try and break arecord for the world's largest pillow fight. The record is held byOregon State University, which brought 766 people together for apillow fight.
The idea came from Jay Kenworthy, a Daily News columnist,and Shayla Foley, two Ball State students trying to spread the wordof Jesus Christ. The couple is part of Campus Crusade for Christ, aChristian organization consisting of about 500 students.
Earlier that day, Foley, Kenworthy and other members of CampusCrusade for Christ wore bright yellow T-shirts sponsored by NewStandard Media, Best Buy and the band Eagar to Fly to promote thepillow fight. Eager to Fly also performed at the event.
Two university police officers were present and several CampusCrusade for Christ members checked participants' pillows at thedoor to make sure they were soft and feather free. One officer wasalso responsible for being a witness if the official record werebroken. At the end of the fight, each participant would also signthe clipboard. All of the signatures would be sent to Guinnessalong with a video tape of the actual fight.
Junior wildlife biology major Misti Carpenter said the pillowfight was a fun event, and she brought two children, Grace andLucas, for which she baby-sits. The children's parents were at aChristmas party, so Carpenter hoped the pillow fight wouldentertain the them for a few hours.
Attendee Jon Scott said Campus Crusade for Christ focuses onstudents spiritual needs. He hoped the fight would let all studentsattending hear the Christian message that would be offered.
"We are here to glorify God like you can in everyday life,"Scott said.
