Presidential and gubernatorial elections are always important. In one year, though, we're going to be voting in perhaps themost-important election of most students' lifetimes.
When President Bush was elected, we had no idea of thecircumstances he would face. We didn't know the importance of thechoice before us; we didn't know a major attack was coming.
Now we know, and we must ask about who we want at the helm.
We've committed troops to an open-ended mission to maintaincontrol of a country across the ocean. We're chasing Saddam Husseinand Osama bin Laden like Elmer Fudd after Bugs Bunny. Millions ofjobs and millions of dollars of wealth are gone. Federal budgetdeficits are at an all-time high. The Attorney General and hisstaff have beaten the Bill of Rights like an old Persian rug.
Now is the time to look carefully at our choices. Are we betteroff now than we were three years ago?
The race for governor will have big consequences, too. TheDemocratic Party has controlled the governor's mansion for 15years.
Joe Kernan became governor this fall, and no one knows if hewill run to keep the job. The Republican nominee likely will beMitch Daniels, Bush's favorite Hoosier.
Can Kernan continue the Democrat dynasty, or is it time forchange?
The winner of the election will have to deal with budgetshortfalls, education and tax questions.
Big decisions are ahead. We have one year to learn all we canand make up our minds. More than ever -- for the sake of ournational security, our soldiers, our rights, our pocketbooks andour education -- we need to be ready to make informeddecisions.
It's time to get started.
