The Butler Bulldogs paid a visit to Lewellen Aquatic CenterWednesday to square off with Ball State's men's swim team. Butler,a team that fields only 10 members, none of which are divers, istrying to build its swimming program, but this was not their night.Ball State eased to a 118-61 victory.
Ball State won 10 of 11 events. Of those 10 wins, the Cardinalsadded a second place finish in four of those events. Ball State'sdivers dove only in exhibition.
Coach Bob Thomas said he was very pleased with his team's times, specifically Ritchie Caudill, Jeff Sheets, and Ian McIntosh, considering the lineup for the meet was not one he would normallyproduce.
"I thought we had a lot of nice swims. I was real pleased withour overall performance based on the competition they were upagainst," Thomas said. "Butler's not that strong of an opponent. Iwas afraid had we done our regular events, the guys would have letdown."
Thomas decided to change the lineup to allow his team to swimevents they normally wouldn't. Before the meet, he allowed eachswimmer to choose the events he would swim.
"That raised the level of competition because they wanted to dotheir best times," he said. "For the most part, they did."
Caudill won the 200 and 500 free, both of which were lifetimebests. Sheets won the 200 IM in what Thomas thought was likely thesecond fastest time on the team this year. He also won the 100back.
"That was a great show on his part," Thomas said. "I was realpleased. Those are events he normally doesn't get to swim."
McIntosh, a freshman, won his first collegiate event against theBulldogs, winning the 100 butterfly.
Ryan Bowman (100 free), Robert Funk (100 breast), Ryan Bounds(1000 free) and Kurtis Leer (50 free) added individual wins to theCardinal cause. The 200 IM relay team of Leer, Funk, Zach Hall andPaul Whitaker added another win.
