LETTER: Immediate actions must be taken by chief, president

Dear Editor:

Policies should be changed immediately within the Ball StateUniversity Police Department. There is no reason deadly forceshould be used against an unarmed suspect. There is no reasonpolice officers cannot carry and "be certified" to use pepperspray, stun guns or other non-lethal devices against unarmedsuspects. There is no reason rookie officers who have not completedpolice academy training should carry firearms. Being trained to usea firearm is one thing; being experienced enough to exercise goodjudgment on the job is quite another.

The tragic and unnecessary killing of Michael McKinney demandsimmediate action. Waiting weeks or months for an investigation tobe completed is not acceptable. Chief Gene Burton and PresidentBlaine Brownell should demonstrate responsible leadership now bydeclaring an interim policy that addresses the above issues, takestangible steps to avert future tragedies and restores somesemblance of respect for the University Police Department.
