LETTER: Change needed to prevent deaths

Dear Editor:

I disagree with Professor Hemeyer's "call on the entire BallState community to exercise restraint" in Monday's Forum of theDaily News Hemeyer's position implies that we are to acceptwhat has happened and to trust that the institutions in place willright any wrong. That is a load of crap. I do not want to acceptwhat happened as simply a mistake. While my heart aches when Iattempt to empathize with the officer, something is wrong when astudent, who might have been drunk and was making a backyard ruckusjust a few blocks away from the bars, is shot to death. I haveseveral questions to add to those already being discussed aroundcampus: How is it that the police were responding to a burglary andnot a disturbance? Is it customary for police officers to yell inorder to diffuse the danger in a situation like this? How was thisevent different from other late-night disturbances? Are guns alwaysdrawn in these kinds of situations? I also want to know why ChiefGene Burton delayed revealing the UPD's policy concerning the useof deadly force until Tuesday morning.

I am alarmed and angry, and I demand a change that would preventshooting deaths in and around my campus.

Eric Murphy

graduate student
