WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cards experience wins, losses in Michigan

Only two Ball State doubles teams able to move past one match

There is no way to describe the women's tennis team's weekend inone word. The tournament held some big wins and some tough lossesat Michigan State's Spartan Cup for the Cardinals. This did not gounnoticed by head coach Kathy Bull.

"At certain places we performed very well," she said.

The team performed the best in Flight A Singles. Jill Wiemanadvanced to the semifinals by upsetting Bowling Green's top singlesplayer Susie Schoenberger in a hard fought match before falling toBall State teammate Melissa Roach.

Roach advanced to the finals, where she lost the Spartan Cup toMichigan's State's Caroline Lay.

"I was very pleased to see Melissa make it to the final," Bullsaid. "She played very well, but it was a long weekend for her andshe couldn't stay at the same level of play in the final."

There were also some tough losses in Flight A . Jenny Batty andKatie Owens lost in the first round. Batty lost to Bowling Green'sAshley Jakupcin and Owens fell to Monica Ribero, Toledo's topsingles player.

In Flight B things went much of the same. Adrienne Campbell andBeth Campus lost in the first round, but Susan Kelley and JessicaThompson made to the semifinals.

The team really struggled in doubles, with only two teams ableto advance past one match. Coach Bull isn't making any excuses.

"Our problem wasn't our opponents, it was ourselves," she said."We just didn't do the things that day that we need to do to windoubles."

Kelley and Batty were able to score an upset over MichiganState's Shelly Brady and Karen Gustafson before falling to a teamfrom Bowling Green.

Wieman and Thompson were victorious in the first round over aCincinnati team before falling to Michigan State's Lay and SarahAndrews. Andrews and Lay advanced to the finals.

Roach and Campbell lost in the first round to Toledo's MyriamCueva and Eunice Paravicini, who went on the win the doublesflight. Roach and Cambell recovered, and won the consolationbracket.

"A loss is a loss wherever it came," Bull said. "I will saythis: they did improve after that loss. But there are still a fewthings we need to fix there."

The team will have a week off to work before they see actionagain. In two weeks they head to Kalamazoo for the preseasonfinale, the ITA Regional.

"We will hear how many players we got into Regional onWednesday," Bull said. "The fall season is coming quickly to anend."
