Strategic Plan may remain intact

Board of Trustees to decide role plan plays in selection

There is no way to tell whether the Strategic Plan will beaffected by President Blaine Brownell's decision to leave BallState, former provost Warren Vander Hill said.

The plan is a booklet of six main goals for the university toachieve over a five-year period that began in 2001. ProvostBeverley Pitts said the choice to make the plan last for five yearswas typical.

"It has some sense of longevity," Pitts said.

Pitts said the Strategic Plan could remain unaffected byBrownell's decision to leave Ball State because the plan was auniversity-wide effort.

"It really did grow out of the community," Pitts said.

Each college and department also has a smaller, more specificplan, Pitts said.

"The plans are the way people understand what your focus, yourmission is," Pitts said.

Brownell was not actively engaged in writing the plan, but heused the plan as a guide in directing Ball State, she said.

Before Brownell came to Ball State, the university did not havea written strategic plan, Vander Hill said.

"The Strategic Plan is part of his agenda," Vander Hill said."Before he came, Ball State did almost no form of strategicplanning."

Pitts said prior to Brownell's arrival, the university had anumber of plans, but one particular model was not in place.

Vander Hill said the next president may want to take a secondlook at the plan.

"Given the kind of plan that it is, it could be modified,"Vander Hill said. He said that the new president could form acommittee to rewrite the plan, or could keep the plan as it is.

Pitts said the Board of Trustees will decide the role theStrategic Plan will play in the selection process.

The fate of the Strategic Plan affects students because studentsparticipated in producing the plan and the plan deals with studentinterest, Pitts said. Pitts said issues of diversity, hiringquality faculty, and campus technology are included in the plan andare of concern to students.

Evaluating the university's progress is an on-going process,Pitts said.

The university has an implementation committee in place to trackwhat has been accomplished from the plan, Vander Hill said.

"The Strategic Plan is always changing," Pitts said. "Next yearwe would be looking at it anyway."
