SOCCER: Cardinals split weekend games

The women's soccer team nearly saw a repeat of two weekends ago when weather again dampened a Friday loss.

Friday, consistent rain showers had the ball and players slip and slide all over Ball State's soccer field.-áIn the midst of the mud, the team lost 2-0 at the hands of Bowling Green.

Kristy Coppes struck early for the Falcons with a shot outside the penalty box that skipped on the grass and bounced over goalie Megan Swafford.-á

Late in the game, Ball State head coach Ron Rainey brought forward Lindsay Wiltshire into the match for fullback Abby Fleming.

"We put three forwards up there in hopes of getting balls wide and on the end line, and Lindsay had a nice chance, and the goalkeeper made a good save," Rainey said.-á"The object was to try to come back and get a tie out of the thing."

Bowling Green took advantage of Ball State's forward thrust and attempted some quick counterattacks.-áOne of the breakouts produced the Falcon's second goal.

The Cardinals came to the field on Sunday looking to make amends for Friday's loss.

Sunday brought bright sun and warmer temperatures to the Ball State Soccer Complex, and the Cardinals tallied a 1-0 win over the Toledo Rockets.-áStacy Shull scored the only goal of the match off a header from Dee Nocero's corner kick.

Rainey said he saw two major differences between Ball State's playing in the two matches.

"We finished on one of our chances," he said "The other big difference was we didn't commit errors that led directly to goal-scoring chances. They had goal-scoring chances, but it was because of good play on their part."((2.<+â-ó
