LETTER: Christians don't hate gays, just disagree

Dear Editor,

This letter is in response to Dr. Frank Gorman's speech forPROUD week, which was reported in the paper Oct. 27. I was startledthat he spoke of the church mongering hate towards gays. Also,Anthony Amstutz, Spectrum internal vice president, saidChristianity was being used as hate toward those living homosexuallifestyles.

What did Dr. Gorman and Mr. Amstutz mean by "hate?" Disagreementdoes not equal hate. I believe it is possible to love someone whiledisagreeing with their lifestyle.

For instance, you can love someone who is committing adultery, yet still think what they are doing is wrong. In fact, you mighteven be so bold as to tell them what you think of their behavior, because you DO care about them.

Even though I respect those involved in homosexuality as people,I believe their lifestyle is wrong.

Dr. Gorman said the passages of the Bible which speak againsthomosexuality are taken out of context. I completely agree that thepassages should be interpreted in the light of the whole Bible.

Of course, if you are going to take the Bible as a whole, youmust believe it is all credible. Dr. Gorman said the Bible is notabsolute truth and can't provide us with all the right answers. Then what can?

Needless to say, I believe the Bible is truth. What I believeabout God and humans is based on it.

When God created humanity, he created Adam and then Eve, who wasto be a "suitable helper" for Adam. God created man and woman toperfectly complement each other in a variety of ways, and heintended them to "become one."

Not a man and a man or a woman and a woman, but a man and awoman. I know individuals may have desires opposite this plan, butthey are not forced to act on these desires, just as someone who istempted by adultery is not compelled to commit this act.

While I believe homosexual behavior is wrong, I do not believeit is greater than any other sin. The root of all sin is decidingto ignore God and do things our own way. Cheating on a test andhomosexual behavior both fall into this category, and to God thereis no difference between them.
