Disabled Students in Action 'Roll Out' win at Air Jam

Last year's winners dispute ruling prohibiting song

The Disabled Students in Action won the the 2003 Air Jam withtheir performance of "Roll Out" by Ludacris, Tuesday night. Thiswas the first year the group participated in the event and freshmanBrandon Gore said they threw it together in a week.

Other members of the group were senior Ozias Burnett, sophomoresBrian Pigford and Ryan Grimes.

Twenty-eight acts originally signed up to partake in thecompetition, but there was only time for 20 acts to perform, EmceeMolly Frey said.

"I am really proud of everyone who tried out," Nick Zuniga, AirJam chairman said. "They were all great."

The men of The Better N'Sync won the independent award, whileBaker and Klipple halls won the resident hall award with theirportrayal of three different Mel Brooks' films.

Alpha Phi sorority won the greek award for the second year in arow with their rendition of "It's a Hard Knock Life," from themusical "Annie." The group had to change its performance less thena week before the contest.

Originally the women of Alpha Phi were to perform "Cell BlockTango" from the musical Chicago.

"The student committee reviewed all the performances and saidAlpha Phi had to change their performance," Edwin Shipley,executive director of the Alumni Association said.

"No one was denied the right to perform, they just had to do analternative song or dance."

Although the Alpha Phi's won their category they were stillweren't happy with not being able to perform their show whileothers performed shows just as provocative.

"They won't let us perform because it's too sexual, but they canlet people perform 'Baby Got Back'," Alpha Phi member LoriJacquemin said.

The Alpha Phi's were notified that they were not allowed toperform their original show on Thursday at 11 p.m.

"We started our new show on Sunday night," Alpha Phi LaurenShaffer said. Shipley said the steering committee and alumniassociation try to keep performances within appropriate taste.

"Quite frankly I think that's what the groups want," Shipleysaid.

Halfway through the evening The Homecoming Steering Committeewas introduced and the final 20 Homecoming royalty candidates werenamed.

This year's Homecoming royalty had 78 candidates and represented44 different Ball State organizations, Courtney Lyman, royaltychairman said.

There were close to 6,000 on-line votes for the royaltycandidates.

The winner of this year's Residence Decorating contest wereWoody/Shales in third, Palmer/Davidson in second and Mysch Hursttaking first.

The American Sign Language Club won the banner contest, with theBlack Student Association taking second and Kappa Alpha Theta andSigma Nu in third.
