Unidentified amounts of mercury discovered in Muncie home

Police closed a city block and sent 25 people to adecontamination center Monday night after unidentified amounts ofmercury were discovered in a local home.

Mayor Dan Canan, who visited the scene on Powers Street betweenMounds and Gharkey streets, said a couple of children discoveredthe mercury in a prescription bottle at a used-car lot at theintersection of 8th and Walnut streets. They played with thesubstance for the majority of the afternoon until someone realizedwhat it was. They then took it to another home and contaminated asecond building.

The block was closed at about 8 p.m.

Canan said no one reported any illness. The people who had to bedecontaminated -- toddlers to adults as old as 30 -- were sent toEmergency Medical Services Station No. 3 as a precaution.

"Nobody's seriously hurt," Canan said.

The mercury levels present in the homes were unknown atpresstime.
