Nocero scores twice in Ball State's victory over Indiana State

Amy Holst's first goal in a Ball State uniform could not havecome at a more opportune time.�

In Sunday's 1-0 victory at Miami (1-3-1) Holst scored the lonegoal of the match in the 71st minute. The chance was created byjunior Dee Nocero's lofted free kick. Senior Michelle Dineen keptthe ball alive in the box and Holst knocked it into the net for thegame-winning goal. The win vaults Ball State's record to 3-2-1.

Head coach Ron Rainey said he was very impressed with the team'svictory, but he said the Cardinals have more long-term goals toaccomplish this season.

"If I'm talking to you four weeks from now and we've won eightstraight, that will be a different story, but it's just one game,"he said.

Rainey said after the Ball State goal Miami turned up theoffensive pressure. The Cardinals had two shots on goal in thegame. Miami tallied eight, most of those coming in the secondhalf.

Senior Megan Swafford, who normally splits time in goal withfreshman Alison Becker, went all 90 minutes for the shutout,recording eight saves. Becker was injured in the Indiana Statevictory.

Friday the women's soccer team traveled to Terrre Haute tobattle the 1-2-1 Indiana State Sycamores.�

The match left the Cardinals bruised, but victorious. FreshmanAlison Becker, who allowed the lone Sycamores goal, left the gameearly in the second half with a concussion. Rainey said Beckerwould visit a doctor in the upcoming week to determine if she canplay Friday against Northern Illinois.

Nocero's two goals were all the Ball State defense would need.Nocero struck once in each half. Holst assisted her first goal.

Rainey said he was happy to see Nocero have such a productiveday. Before Friday's game Nocero, who was second on the team intotal points in 2002, had not recorded a goal or an assist in theCardinals' first four games.

The Cardinals enjoyed an opportunistic offensive output with twogoals on 14 shots, while the Sycamores translated 21 shots into onegoal.
