MTV pulls plug on 'Tom Green Show;' Muncie clip won't air

Show's ratings drop, prompting network to order cancellation

MTV's cancellation of "The New Tom Green Show" means Tom Green and Glenn Humplik's antics around Muncie won't air on national television.

New episodes, including cuts from Green and his crew's Muncie excursion, were supposed to air this week, but reruns have replaced the originals, and MTV has stopped the show's production.

According to the Associated Press, the show's cancellation resulted from low ratings. The show's first week averaged 889,000 viewers but plummeted down to 255,000 during last week's reruns.

Mayor Dan Canan said he was looking forward to seeing the city receive national coverage. Canan had given Green the key to Muncie after naming Sept. 17 "Tom Green and Glenn Humplik Day."

"From that perspective, I am disappointed that 'The (New) Tom Green Show' was canceled," Canan said.

Ball State alumni Andy Bell, Jason Harris, and Joe Whetsel, and senior telecommunications major David Plough submitted a tape to the "Why Should Tom and Glenn Come to Our Town" contest. The tape convinced the talk-show crew to appeared in Muncie.

Whetsel said he wants to send a message to MTV.

"A lot of people want to watch the show and want the recognition on television for putting on such a great parade that was thrown together at the last minute," Whetsel said. "It won't truly be appreciated because it won't be on MTV."

Junior business major Yusuke Misono said he went to Dill Street Bar and Grill to see Green.

"I wanted to see him because he's Tom Green, and Muncie would have been on national TV."

Senior photojournalism major Kim Anderson said, "It would've been nice for other people besides David Letterman to get Muncie's name out on TV."

Even though Muncie lost a chance to be on MTV, Muncie didn't lose much in local publicity, Canan said.

"I'm 49-years-old, and I had no idea what kind of crowd Tom Green would draw," he said. "It was over 2,000 people, and the nice thing was, they were all high school and college kids. It was nice that downtown could get that exposure.

"I thank Joe for all of his efforts. His heart was in it."
