Hold the pickles, pile on the lettuce, McDonald's gets healthy alternative

Go Active Meal being tested in Muncie, other Indiana cities

Indiana and Muncie residents are serving as guinea pigs for McDonald's new product, the Go Active Meal.

The $4.99 meal includes salad and bottled water and was introduced Wednesday at 150 different McDonald's around the state after the corporation agreed to work with Oprah Winfrey's trainer to promote a more health-conscious meal.

Besides the food, the restaurant is offering a clip-on pedometer and an exercise booklet.

Four types of salads -- the Cobb, the Club, the Caesar and the Del-Rio -- are served with the pedometer and booklet.

"As long as the salads are healthy and well made, that's good for people," Jayanthi Kandiah, professor of family and consumer sciences, said.

But each salad is served with combinations of cheese, eggs, bacon, chicken and vegetables.

"Why did they throw in the bacon?," Kandiah said. "It defeats the purpose."

Kandiah said McDonald's should add nutritional labels so people can make informed decisions. She said consumers need to see how much fat, calories and sodium are in their food.

Freshman Ryan Ramsey said he doesn't associate McDonald's with a healthy menu.

"If I am going to watch what I eat, I'm going to go to Subway," Ramsey said.

Still, Ramsey said he would try the salads, especially if a pedometer is included.

Freshman Brian Atkinson said people need to watch what they put in their mouths.

"We are the most obese country in the world," he said.

Both students say they exercise regularly to stay in shape and have fun, Exercise also allows them to eat those not-so-healthy foods, they said.

Currently, the Go Active Meal will last until the end of October. The McDonald's in Muncie said the meals are selling quickly because people are more health-conscious.

McDonald's has no plan to make a Go Active Meal for children.((2$-¬+â-¬+â-»+â-â
