ARTS: Indy-based alumni get a taste of Muncie

Ball State sponsors third-annual Indy Arts Walk

Indianapolis alumni will get a taste of Muncie this week without traveling far from home.

The Ball State Alumni Association, College of Fine Arts, College of Architecture and Planning, and the Fine Arts Alumni Association will host the third-annual Indy Arts Walk.

Festivities will begin between 5 and 6 p.m. Thursday at the Rathskeller, 401 E. Michigan St. in Indianapolis. The location is in the Massachusetts Avenue area downtown.

The event offers art, music, comedy, dance and food.

Ball State University Singers and the Jazz Ensemble will provide music. The student troupe REFLEX will provide comic relief.

"I am extremely excited for the University Singers to represent Ball Sate at the Indy Arts Walk," Zach Winningham, a member of the University Singers, said. "It will be a good time."

The event was the brainchild of Robert Kvam, dean of the College of Fine Arts, and several colleagues. They wanted to have a closer interaction with Indianapolis alumni.

"Indianapolis has the largest concentration of alumni in one area of the world; we wanted to have more of a connection," Kvam said.

Local eateries will offer food for guests, and several Ball State organizations will offer entertainment alongside local Indy artisans. Eateries along the Massachusetts Avenue area will provide the setting for the evening.

Guests of the event will be able to eat from a selection of participating merchants. Participants include the Abbey Coffeehouse, Agio, Bazbeaux Pizza, Dean Johnson Gallery, Old Point Tavern, Rathskellar, and the 4-Star Gallery.

The party will move along the avenue sampling food and entertainment alike, arriving back at the Rathskellar around 8 p.m. where the Jazz Ensemble will perform to bring a close to the evening.

The College of Architecture and Planning is co-hosting the Indy Arts Walk this year for the first time. For the past two years CAP has had exhibits in the Arts Walk.

"That part of Indy [Massachusetts Avenue], is a place where a great deal of alumni of CAP are in practice," Bilello said. "Many have offices near the Massachusetts Avenue area."

Architectural and Landscaping offices of the CAP alumni will be open for exhibition along Massachusetts Avenue during the event, Bilello said.

Bilello said it was natural for the CAP to get involved with the College of Fine Arts, because of the connection between arts and architecture.-á Bilello said that the two areas of study are often taught in the same building and they go hand-in-hand.

Bilello said that it is good for alumni in Indianapolis to know about CAP's Indy alumni and their practices.

Kvam estimates some 25,000 Ball State alumni live in the Indianapolis area.

Kvam said that guests of the event are anxious to have an event with Ball State located closer to their homes.

"We have had a great past experience, and I am anxious for this year, " Kvam said.
