Thursday Night Fights

The Cards kick off their 2003 campaign tonight against Indiana State

Every Little League Baseball World Series since 1992.

The Academy-Award winning movie "Pearl Harbor."

And now, Ball State Stadium's first night football game.

This is a list of just a few permanent and temporary lighting jobs Musco Lighting has done around the world. That last one happens tonight.

A spectacle of nearly 36 fixtures on three separate towers standing more than 100 feet in the air will illuminate the field as fans arrive at the stadium to watch the Cards take on Indiana State.

"I think playing the game in the evening gives more people the opportunity to attend. Students typically prefer evening activities," Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham said.

The rental lights arrived on Monday and were tested both Tuesday and Wednesday night. There are two towers on the west side and one on the east of the stadium.

A successful turnout in attendance tonight could mean a second night game in the future.

"This is certainly an opportunity to see if it will generate more interest with greater student attendance," Cunningham said. "Certainly if we have success, it will speak well to the future."

A private gift covered the $50,000 bill to set up the lights for one evening of football that could see a different fan base fill up the stands.

"I hope all of our traditional fan base shows up," Daniel Byrnes, director of Sports Facilities and Recreation Services, said. "There will be fans that may not typically come to a Saturday afternoon game.

"I think people will be interested in the novelty effect of a night game. It should be quite the opportunity."
