AT ISSUE: Students who want to support Ball State athletics should start by attending events

Over the summer, President Blaine Brownell and athletics director Bubba Cunningham took a lot of abuse for cutting three sports because of budget concerns.

Students wrote letters to this paper. They sent e-mails. They signed petitions.

Some wondered in print if the administration even cared about sports at all.

But now the administration is showing that it does, in fact, support athletics. The university has made an effort to turn tonight's football game into a must-see event for students. They're using lights, fliers, fireworks and even a Family Fun Zone to draw in the crowds.

Many students expressed concern that this summer's cuts were made to cover for football's financial mistakes, but whether that's true or not, it's no reason to avoid the team. It's still one of the Ball State sports that students should be looking out for in the future.

And, thankfully, there is something students can do to assure the future of football and every other athletic team at Ball State. Get your butts in those seats.

Attending a sporting event -- any sporting event -- will help protect each team from the fate that befell men's cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.

On Monday, ESPN announced a deal to televise at least 100 Mid-American Conference football and basketball games. They're still not going to cover an event where half the seats are empty, though.

Do you think Ball State deserves national exposure and the financial help that could come along with it? Prove it.

Let's fill the nest, Cardinals.
