Tower concert to occur Thursday

The center of Ball State's campus will provide entertainment Thursday evening with a performance of the Shafer Tower carillons followed by a performance by the America's Hometown Band.

John Courter, college carillonneur at Berea College, Berea, Ky., and world-famous carilloneur will perform a free concert starting at 5 p.m. featuring music from the baroque period and folk songs from various countries.

Courter will perform the "Gaudi's Chimneys" and arrangements of two pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach.

"John is a very competent performer," Kirby Koriath, professor of music performance, said.

This is Courter's second summer performing at Shafer Tower. Courter was also the composer of the dedication piece for Shafer Tower titled "Suite No. 1" for carillon.

Although Courter will be performing at Ball State, most of his energy is dedicated to his composition, Koriath said.

Courter has won numerous awards for his compositions including two awards from The Guild of Carillonneurs in North America. His pieces have become part of carilloneurs' repertoire all over the country as well as in Europe, Koriath said.

Following the carillon concert, the America's Hometown Band will gather under the tower to perform its concert titled "Sound the Bells."

The band containing approximately 65 performers, most of whom work at Ball State, is a non-profit group that performs numerous concerts throughout the year, music director Roger McConnell said.

The group will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the concert will feature a performance with the carillon played by visiting lecturer in carillon from Culver Academies John Gouwens.

The piece to be performed by the band and Gouwens is titled the "1812 Overture" and will feature cannons and rifles, Koriath said.

Courter will perform another concert later this summer. The next carillon concert is Aug. 26 at 6 p.m. featuring Gouwens.**2&-¬.#?Tower 7.7.03DNEditorial**2_+â-¦0+â-+2AUDT
